Our lease and ongoing ability to continue as a General Practice in McLaren Vale is dependent on the ownership of McLaren Vale Hospital. Please consider becoming a member of McLaren Vale Hospital to ensure that you can have your say on the ongoing future of the hospital site and Wellbeing McLaren Vale. You can become a member by completing a membership form which you can obtain from https://mclarenvalehospital.com.au/membership-and-positions-vacant/ or by attending the hospital any Monday morning.

Facts in Brief

  • Mclaren Vale Hospital closed as an inpatient facility on June 30 2023

  • An overwhelming majority of the community (more than 85%) voted in July 2023 to transfer the ownership of the hospital over to James Brown Memorial Trust (Kalyra) for the ongoing benefit of the community.

  • Kalyra have guaranteed to honour our current ten-year lease.

  • Mr Henry Davis, a lawyer, who does not live in the area and has no previous association with the hospital mounted a Supreme court challenge to the decision.

  • The Save the McLaren Vale Hospital Group which includes Mr Davis has stated that they do not believe our lease is valid.

  • Mr Davis's challenge was heard in the Supreme Court of South Australia in August this year. The closing remarks of both legal teams are available for you to read on the hospital website https://mclarenvalehospital.com.au/announcements/

  • The judge is expected to rule on the outcome by the end of October.

  • The AGM of the hospital is due at the end of October. There are board positions vacant. It is vital that competent experienced board members are voted in who can manage the future of the hospital regardless of the outcome of the Supreme court hearing.

  • If the hospital loses the Supreme court case, it is likely that the hospital members will vote again on the future of the hospital.

  • We believe that it is the best interests of the community for the ownership of the hospital to transition over to Kalyra. We also believe that this is the only decision which will guarantee the future of Wellbeing McLaren Vale.

To ensure the ongoing viability of Wellbeing McLaren Vale please become a member before September 30 2024 and exercise your vote.
